Wood Construction Award 2020 in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg

The Timber Construction Award 2020 Building with wood in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg is awarded to buildings that have been constructed predominantly from wood and wood-based materials as well as other renewable raw materials. The primary objective is to promote the use and further development of this resource-saving, environmentally friendly and sustainable building material. The buildings to be submitted should be of high design quality, exemplary in their implementation and comply with the principles of social and ecological sustainability. Ecology, energy efficiency and economic efficiency in operation and maintenance up to recyclability are included in the evaluation.

Deadline is Monday, the 9 December 2019 (date of postmark).

The Wood Construction Prize is awarded by the State Advisory Council for Forestry and the Timber Industry of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as well as the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitalisation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with numerous partners, including the Chambers of Architects and Engineers and the Informationsverein Holz from Düsseldorf.

8/2013: DIN standards on earthen building come into force
Since August 2013, binding standards for earthen construction have come into force in Germany for the first time since 1971. They apply to clay blocks, clay masonry and clay plaster mortars. This means that earth as a building material has finally arrived in contemporary construction. For non-standardised and on-site produced earthen building materials, the earthen building rules first published in 1998 continue to apply. With the current revision of the interior plaster application standard DIN 18550-2, the course has been set towards Europe-wide recognition of the material.

5/2013: Polystyrene thermal insulation - The madness continues: The consequences of insulating with polystyrene can be devastating: for the living climate and also in case of fire. Who benefits from the constantly tightened energy-saving regulations?

Styrofoam as a façade insulation material is often the material of choice when houses are to be thermally insulated. But this can have devastating consequences: for the indoor climate and also in case of fire. Already at the end of 2011, NDR dealt with the topic of thermal insulation and pointed out risks and problems. Above all, the fire test with the insulating material polystyrene caused a sensation throughout Germany. The ABG, which cooperates with the car-sharing provider Book 'n Drive, will provide five cars and an electricity charging station on the ground floor of the building, which does not have a basement. Unused electricity from the car can also be fed back into the storage system. It is "energy-autarkic", meaning it could completely disconnect from the general electricity grid.

Photovoltaics annual review 2012: Multi-layered markets in upheaval
As expected, 2012 was a difficult year for the global photovoltaic industry. Production capacities were consistently too high, and this caused price collapses along the value chain, negative margins and losses for photovoltaic manufacturers. Despite these difficulties, the global photovoltaic market grew by 10-17 % in 2012 to around 31-33 GW, even established markets like Germany continued to grow. The latest figures from the German Ministry of the Environment show that the photovoltaic market in Germany reached a volume of 7.6 GW by the end of the year, despite the cut in the solar power feed-in tariff. This is again a World record for annual installed PV capacity. The Chinese photovoltaic market probably doubled again in 2012. Final figures are not yet available, but if the estimate by IMS Research from last October is correct, China would be the second largest PV market in the world with 5 GW. The installed capacity includes not only the plants that have been approved for feed-in tariffs, but also those from the "Golden Sun" programme with a total of 1.7 GW.

HTW Berlin: Only in the year 2150 completely regenerative energy

The EEG is supposed to achieve the goals of the Paris climate summit. But at the rate of expansion to date, according to a study by Berlin's HTW, we will have to wait until 2150 for Germany to switch completely to renewable energies.
It is not news that the implementation of the climate turnaround will not proceed without effort. Based on the expansion progress of energy systems for renewable energies from the years 2000 to 2015, Volker Quaschning from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences has calculated in the so-called "sector coupling study".how long it would take for Germany to obtain 100 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. He arrives at the year 2150.

"Paris goals practically impossible"
"This makes it practically impossible to meet the Paris targets. Either the political leaders lack the necessary expertise or they do not intend to comply with the climate protection agreement at all," says Quaschning.

"We need to expand wind and solar energy three to six times faster than planned by the federal government," Volker Quaschning specified the results of his research group Solar Storage Systems at HTW Berlin: onshore wind power would have to be expanded by 6.3 gigawatts net per year instead of 2.8 GW gross, as envisaged in the EEG 2016. In the case of photovoltaics, as much as 15 GW would be required annually instead of the 2.5 GW envisaged in the EEG.

Darmstadt decides on "socially just use of land

In its meeting on 3 July 2019, the municipal council decided to introduce the principles for "socially just land use in Darmstadt" (SoBoDA) and to set up a responsible project group. The set of rules is one element of the 21 points of the bundle of measures of the Housing Policy Concept of the City of Science Darmstadt, which is used as a new overarching political steering instrument, and is listed in it under point eight.

Among other things, it obliges developers and investors to designate housing for low and medium incomes, to assume costs for planning services, development facilities and compensatory measures, and to participate in the financing of day-care centres and primary schools.

"Our goal is 10,000 new flats by 2020 - the introduction of the principles as well as the SoBoDA project group are elementary components of this plan. In this way, we ensure sustainable and socially acceptable housing development in the City of Science Darmstadt. For all services that developers are obliged to provide, the project group will ensure that the measures remain appropriate. Each building project will be individually assessed on the basis of a defined scheme by correlating areas, building rights, values and encumbrances and finally mapping the increase in value," explains Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch.

"Since March 2017, it has already been the case for the City of Science Darmstadt that at least 25 per cent of the gross floor area of housing must be secured for socially subsidised rental housing and at least 20 per cent for middle-income housing," adds Barbara Akdeniz, head of the social affairs department.

"For urban land, a municipal commitment under the SoBoDA stipulates that an additional up to 10 per cent of housing will be secured for special forms of housing, for example housing projects by cooperatives, building and housing groups, senior citizens or assisted living," Akdeniz continues.

In combination with the other 20 measures and instruments of the housing policy concept - including the development of new building areas, redensification, qualified rent index, rent brake - the City of Science Darmstadt is using the SoBoDA to drive the creation of housing and show how the urgently needed affordable housing in Darmstadt can be achieved.

The comprehensive portfolio of instruments and measures of the housing policy concept is primarily intended to improve the supply of population groups disadvantaged on the housing market (low and medium income). Through the development of social, ecological and transport policy innovative concepts, further neighbourhoods with a high quality of life will be created in the urban area.

Background: The principles of socially appropriate land use apply to urban development contracts/implementation contracts insofar as new, additional planning law for residential use is created. Only if the city creates new planning law and the investor can expect an appropriate added value as a result, can urban development contracts with the specification of "socially appropriate land use" measures be considered. In contracts for the allocation and sale of urban land to be used as housing, the rules of the SoBoDA apply regardless of new planning law. The housing policy concept as well as the regulatory contents of the SoBoDA are regularly evaluated and adapted if necessary. .

New FNR brochure "Building and Designing with Renewable Raw Materials

In the new brochure "Finishing and Designing with Renewable Raw Materials" published by the Agency for Renewable Resources (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V.). (FNR) provides a compact overview of bio-based building and furnishing products for interior designers, renovators and builders. The topics range from floor coverings, paints and wood protection systems to wooden windows and furniture for indoor and outdoor use. A chapter on the subject of 'Indoor climate and healthy living' and a brief classification of bio-based materials round off the brochure.
The brochure is available for 3 Euro (plus shipping costs) at mediathek.fnr.de and is available there as a free download.

A small excerpt of the contents:

Floors made of renewable raw materials hardly tend to build up static charge and are therefore suitable for house dust allergy sufferers: In rooms with a natural hair carpet, a cork or wooden floor, fewer dust particles float in the room air.
Casein inks, also known as quark inks, are now also available on the basis of vegetable proteins. After alkaline digestion with borax, soda or hydrated lime, they have a particularly high adhesive strength and can also be pigmented well.
Wooden windows are already available today with thermal insulation. Researchers at ift Rosenheim have discovered that an alternative could be offered in the future by woods with a low bulk density, such as poplar or fir, which are suitable for the production of highly thermally insulating windows without any additional insulating materials.
