Student residence Vaakerstrasse Kassel

34127 Kassel: Two buildings with 4 room flatshares each in loam and low-energy construction, transparent thermal insulation, high proportion of own work. Completion: 1995

With the project "Planning, Financing and Construction of Ecologically Sound, High-Quality and Affordable Student Housing in Self-Help", students have taken advantage of the opportunities offered by the Kassel Project Studies to learn on their own responsibility.

The financing was done by own contribution, student housing subsidies, donations in kind and money and loans. The result was 2 low-energy houses with 120 m2 (4 rooms, kitchen, shower/WC, WC) on an urban residual plot in the settlement stock. (480 cbm, GRZ 0.38), which was considered unbuildable because it is very narrow (11.5 x 54 m).

Construction costs
325,000 Euro Total costs
57,500 Euro Own contribution
60,000 Euro subsidies for student housing
65,000 Euro donations in kind and money
82,500 Euro credit
=> 1.014 Euro/m² (gross)

Earthworks, drainage and foundations were carried out by a construction company. 20 trainees worked 16,000 hours on the self-help construction site from July until 8 of the project participants moved in in April 1995.

The rooms offer 64 cbm under a clay barrel vault rising to the south for the realization of one's own living ideas: 14 sqm living space + 5 sqm sleeping gallery above the hall (expandable on beams). A skylight and a small north window at the sleeping place allow cross ventilation.
