On siedlungen.eu there are now photos of the sustainable showcase quarter eQ in Pfaffenhofen for the first time.
In 2012, Pfaffenhofen received the German Sustainability Award in the category "Small Towns and Municipalities", and in 2011 the town of Pfaffenhofen was named the most sustainable town in the world (category 20,000 - 75,000 inhabitants), partly because of the Eco-Quartier.
Shortly after the shutdown of the Swiss old reactor Mühleberg it goes Philippsburg 2 nuclear power plantfrom the grid on 31.12.2019 as planned. Berlin, 22 October 2018: Vattenfall Energy Solutions, Gewobag and the energy storage start-up Lumenion are jointly piloting a new type of sector-coupled steel storage system at Bottroper Weg in Berlin-Tegel, which absorbs regional generation peaks from wind and solar energy in a grid-serving manner and later provides the renewable energy as heat and electricity in line with demand.
"With this pilot project, we want to demonstrate the particular technical and economic suitability of thermal storage systems for the effective utilisation of large quantities of wind and solar energy in a very practical way," says Alexander Voigt, founder and Managing Director of Lumenion. "Some of our team have been working with renewable energies for over 30 years and with energy storage systems for over ten years. Based on this experience, we made a conscious decision in favour of steel as a storage medium for the second phase of the energy transition, which is just beginning."
The Lumenion steel storage system stores "electricity peaks" for less than 2 cent/KWh in a cost- and space-efficient manner at up to 650° Celsius as heat, which can be converted back into electricity using a turbine unit if required - or used entirely as heat. As a co-founder of Solon, Q-Cells and Younicos, among others, Voigt has been successfully launching solar modules and storage systems on the market since the 1990s.

If the stored energy can then be utilised not only as heat but also in the form of electricity, that is a milestone. The high-temperature storage system brings us a big step closer to this!"
Karsten Mitzinger from Gewobag Energie- und Dienstleistungsgesellschaft adds: "The energy transition can only succeed if it is decentralised and based on partnership. As a housing industry, we are making our contribution to climate protection in our neighbourhoods. With this project, we are pleased to be able to demonstrate the good cooperation between energy supply companies, municipal housing associations and innovative start-ups. Only together can we master the major challenges of the energy transition."
In the Tegler pilot project, a 2.4 megawatt hour (MWh) storage block is being trialled for commercial use and transferred to regular operation. To this end, the unit will be integrated with an existing gas-powered CHP unit from Vattenfall Energy Solutions into the neighbourhood electricity and local heating supply of a 1970s apartment building owned by Gewobag. The storage system will temporarily absorb any power peaks that are not required and feed them into the heat supply later on as needed. In a second step, a reconversion into electricity is also planned.
Parallel to the construction of the pilot project, Lumenion is testing a 450 kWh prototype on the campus of the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) in Oberschöneweide. The HTW is supporting Lumenion with practical accompanying research in the development, testing and validation of data, as well as in the regulation and operational management of the innovative storage system.
In further projects, Lumenion storage systems with 40 MWh and even 1,400 MWh are to be created as the next milestones. These giga-storages can integrate existing and newly added large quantities of renewable electricity generation from wind and solar power into the existing grids in a particularly favourable, efficient and demand-oriented manner, thus enabling a significant acceleration of the energy transition.
Environment Minister Franz Untersteller reacted with relief to the agreement reached yesterday by the coalition on the amendment of the Climate Protection Act. The law is to be passed by the state parliament before the summer break and will then replace the previous climate protection law from 2013.
"With this law, we are creating a new basis for forward-looking climate protection in the state. This was and is a core concern of Green environmental policy in this legislative period," said Untersteller.
Entry into the general PV obligation for new buildings
Above all, he said, the agreement on mandatory PV was groundbreaking. "We are the first state to install solar as standard on new non-residential buildings. This is innovative and courageous. It makes building modern and climate protection a matter of course."
In the non-residential sector, for example on warehouses and production halls or car parks, there is enormous potential, said Untersteller. These roof surfaces are made for large systems.
Untersteller sees the PV obligation on non-residential buildings as an introduction to a general PV obligation for new buildings, which he believes must come in the next few years. "Not only in Baden-Württemberg," says Untersteller.
Apart from the boost for solar energy and climate protection, the PV obligation will also secure and create jobs.
Municipal heat planning
Another key element in the new climate protection law will be municipal heating planning, Untersteller continued. The approximately 100 large cities and municipalities, in which about half of the people in Baden-Württemberg live, will be obliged by the law to submit a comprehensive heating plan. "On the basis of such planning, a lot will move and can be moved in the municipalities in the direction of renewable heat. For example, innovative neighbourhood concepts or the expansion of heating networks will make progress," said Untersteller. The costs for the planning will be borne by the state.
"The amendment to the Climate Protection Act will move Baden-Württemberg forward," the Environment Minister affirmed. "We are continuing to develop our climate protection policy and are thus fulfilling our obligation to future generations."

How can people be helped to leave their cars behind more often for short journeys? Answers to this question are to be provided by a new project funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The project "Living Leads Mobility" aims to create new opportunities and offers for climate-friendly mobility in the residential environment.
In up to five metropolitan regions, it aims to show tenants in particular attractive options for leaving their cars at home more often, switching to alternatives and thus doing something for climate protection and their own health.
Do I take the bike key or the car key? Mobility decisions for short journeys in the neighbourhood usually follow habit. With the new project "Living leads mobility", the project partners want to develop practicable and climate-friendly alternatives. By providing various mobility options directly at the place of residence, the aim is to increase choice and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The offers include, for example, the installation of secure parking facilities for bicycles, walking frames and pushchairs, the establishment of a car-sharing station in the residential area or the simple posting of a bus timetable on the notice board of the residential complex. In practice, this means close cooperation between housing companies, local authorities and mobility service providers. The joint project will be funded over the next three years with a total of around 1.1 million euros from the National Climate Initiative (NKI).
