Wood Construction Award 2020 in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg

The Timber Construction Award 2020 Building with wood in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg is awarded to buildings that have been constructed predominantly from wood and wood-based materials as well as other renewable raw materials. The primary objective is to promote the use and further development of this resource-saving, environmentally friendly and sustainable building material. The buildings to be submitted should be of high design quality, exemplary in their implementation and comply with the principles of social and ecological sustainability. Ecology, energy efficiency and economic efficiency in operation and maintenance up to recyclability are included in the evaluation.

Deadline is Monday, the 9 December 2019 (date of postmark).

The Wood Construction Prize is awarded by the State Advisory Council for Forestry and the Timber Industry of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as well as the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitalisation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with numerous partners, including the Chambers of Architects and Engineers and the Informationsverein Holz from Düsseldorf.

Electromobility: Raw materials for the transport revolution


Even if the share of electric vehicles on German roads increases significantly by 2050, the demand for raw materials for electromobility can be met. Global deposits of lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite and platinum significantly exceed the forecast demand. These are the findings of a recent analysis by the Öko-Institut on behalf of Agora Verkehrswende.

DBU: Affordable energy-efficient housing and transport transition as key to sustainable development

"Well-insulated and energy-efficient modern housing must remain affordable for poorer people. This is crucial, said DBU Secretary General Dr Heinrich Bottermann at the expert forum "Urban spaces in the face of climate change", to ensure that society does not become divided. He also emphasised how important it is for climate-neutral and resource-conserving neighbourhood development to rely more on timber construction and to push back concrete buildings. "If concrete, then only recycled concrete," emphasised Bottermann."

Dr Lars Grotewold, climate protection expert at the Mercator Foundation, spoke out in favour of a transport revolution in cities. Despite all efficiency efforts, transport still causes as many emissions as it did 25 years ago. Grotewold's ambitious demand: "By the middle of the century, the transport sector must be completely CO2-be free."
