"A quarter of a century ago, Bernd Janes looked for like-minded comrades-in-arms and founded an ecologically oriented housing estate on the outskirts of Kohlhof. At first, the new neighbors were eyed critically by the surrounding community. No wonder, because the houses were built in wood, four families shared one house and the gardens were not separated from each other by fences, but merged seamlessly into each other."
The popular ESA dormitory on the campus of the TU Kaiserslautern (TUK) is in great need of renovation. The foundation's renovation concept for TUK envisions the former experimental building becoming a CO2-neutral building. The estimated costs for the work have not yet been fully raised. Therefore, the ESA residents are participating with a crowdfunding campaign, which has been available on the Startnext platform since September 13.
"We are all grateful that we can continue to live in the ESA and contribute to the building's continued existence. There is a unique atmosphere here," says resident Marcel Meyer. At the end of May, the dormitory was finally handed over to its new owner, the TUK Foundation. Now the renovation work, worth a total of two million euros, is to get underway quickly. The remaining cost share of 700,000 euros is currently being raised by the foundation through fundraising. The ESA housing association's crowdfunding campaign is intended to generate further publicity and finance a modern solar system and insulation for the listed building.
On the campaign website at www.startnext.com/ein-haus-im-gruenen a pitch video and further information are available. "So that potential supporters can learn even more about us and life in the dormitory, we are also posting self-made video clips and a virtual tour of the building on the ESA website and on Facebook," explains Meyer.

Renovated all around, the dormitory will act as a gateway between the university campus and the Palatinate Forest in the future. "TU Kaiserslautern is proud to present such a unique building on its campus. With the energy-saving architecture, the builders have created a dormitory that has not lost its relevance today after 35 years. This is one reason why it was the first building on our campus to be listed at the end of last year," says Prof. Dr. Arnd Poetzsch-Heffter, President of TUK.
Annette Mechel, board member of the foundation, adds: "As the new owner of the dormitory, the TUK Foundation is pleased to be able to accompany this exciting project. The commitment and willingness of the residents to cooperate are helping us enormously to implement the not so easy renovation.
The crowdfunding campaign is expected to be available on Startnext for three months. The TUK Foundation and the ESA housing community are happy about every small donation that contributes to the preservation of the unique building. On the campaign website, supporters can receive a thank-you gift in return and request a donation receipt.
Further information is available at: esa.dormitory.uni-kl.de. On Facebook, the page of the ESA dormitory can be found under "@esakaiserslautern".
The TU Kaiserslautern is the only university in Rhineland-Palatinate with a technical and scientific orientation. Future-oriented study programs, practical training and a modern infrastructure are the framework conditions that students find at the campus university. The TU Kaiserslautern was awarded the Excellence Prize for Studies and Teaching in the nationwide competition "Excellent Teaching". With this award, the TU demonstrates the high value of its study programs. In addition, students and scientists benefit from the numerous internationally renowned research institutions that cooperate closely with the TU Kaiserslautern in the field of applied research.

29.12.20 CO2 offsets of the state administration flow into foundation
The state of Baden-Württemberg is setting an example in climate protection: by 2040 at the latest, the state administration is to operate in a climate-neutral manner. The new Climate Protection Foundation supports it in this by using the interest on its share capital to promote research and development as well as educational projects in the field of climate protection. In addition, the state, municipalities, companies and all citizens can offset their CO2 emissions through compensation payments and thus become climate neutral. The cooperation partner will be the non-profit climate protection organisation myclimate Germany.
Stuttgart, December 29, 2020 - On January 1, 2021, the new Climate Protection Foundation under the umbrella of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation will officially begin its work. The Baden-Württemberg Climate Protection Foundation is endowed with a capital of 49.5 million euros and supports the state administration in its goal of climate neutrality by 2040, offsetting the CO2 emissions of official air travel of state ministries, subordinate authorities and universities. Companies, districts and municipalities as well as all citizens can also make compensation payments to the foundation. For the simple calculation and direct compensation of CO2 emissions, the state is currently having an app developed under the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior. The assets of the Climate Protection Foundation are invested sustainably by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance as part of the asset management of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation. Further information, including the foundation's statutes, can be found at Klimaschutzstiftung BadenWürttemberg - BW Foundation.
"I am very pleased that we can now get started with the Baden-Württemberg Climate Protection Foundation. We must not neglect the international climate goals even in times of the Corona pandemic - and with the Climate Protection Foundation we are making an important contribution to Baden-Württemberg," says Christoph Dahl, Managing Director of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation. "The state is thus taking on a pioneering role, as no other federal state can boast a comparable foundation."
Strategic partnership with myclimate Germany The Carbon Offset Foundation will establish carbon offset projects with its own team, into which the offsets can flow. In addition, the foundation will develop its own educational and research projects. The strategic partner will be myclimate Germany, one of the leading providers of CO2 offsetting and carbon offset consulting based in Reutlingen. myclimate Germany supports the Carbon Offset Foundation Baden-Württemberg primarily through strategic consulting, the calculation of CO2 emissions, and the implementation of CO2 offsetting. myclimate provides CO2 certificates from carbon offset projects that are certified according to the strictest quality standards and supports the Carbon Offset Foundation in the development and implementation of its own carbon offset projects, both regionally and internationally.
The Agency for Renewable Resources (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. - FNR) provides guidelines for submitting outlines and applications for projects within the scope of the Forest Climate Fund. (FNR) supports potentially interested parties in applying for funding. The guidelines are available in printed form and for Download before.
The 58-page brochure in A5 format provides concise information on the funding procedure and quickly explains how to use the easy-Online internet portal to submit a project outline and project application. Fact sheets and explanations on state aid law supplement the funding guidelines.
The "Guidelines for the submission of outlines and applications under the joint BMEL and BMU Forest Climate Fund funding line" are aimed not only at research institutions and research associations, but also at state forestry institutions, municipalities, forestry associations and other associations, as well as private individuals whose projects fall under one of the five priority areas of the Forest Climate Fund funding guideline.
Funding from the Forest Climate Fund, which is jointly financed by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), can be applied for for projects with a maximum duration of 5 years.
Background:
The Forest Climate Fund funding guideline was launched jointly by BMEL and BMU in 2013 as part of the Energy and Climate Fund.
Forestry and landscaping projects to adapt forests to climate change and to ensure carbon storage and increase CO2-The following projects are aimed at increasing the storage of wood products and the CO2-reduction and substitution by wood products, projects on research and monitoring, and projects on information and communication. The funding procedure is two-stage, i.e. applicants first submit a project outline and after successful review by the project management agency FNR and coordination with the ministries BMU and BMEL, a project application is invited.
The FNR has been active as the BMEL's project management agency for the Renewable Resources funding programme since 1993. It also supports research topics in the fields of sustainable forestry and innovative wood use. Since 1 January 2019, it has also been the project management agency for the Forest Climate Fund funding guideline. The Competence and Information Centre for Forests and Wood (KIWUH) is a department of the FNR.
at the Sustainable Procurement Symposium in Dortmund on 26 August 2021
The Sustainable Procurement Day is a platform for exchange for procurers and decision-makers from municipalities, private and public institutions as well as churches and companies. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze is the patron. The Agency for Renewable Resources e. V. (FNR), project management agency of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, will be represented with a workshop on the topic of "Public building and renovation with wood - the right way to tender for timber construction projects" in addition to the stand "The renewable office".
Climate-friendly construction, renovation and insulation with sustainable materials is becoming more and more common practice in public building projects as well. Sustainable municipal management includes the building sector - keyword climate-neutral municipality/administration. Wood as a building material has become the focus of attention in recent years, and there are many reasons for this: Wood stores CO2Depending on the degree of prefabrication, it can considerably shorten construction times and, due to its low dead weight, is ideal for adding storeys, e.g. in the case of redensification in urban development.
However, in order to successfully launch public timber construction projects, a targeted award procedure is crucial. This is because even during the planning and tendering stages, it is important to take into account the significant differences compared to solid construction, e.g. in terms of timing, the submission of building applications and the timely involvement of timber construction expertise.
Participation in the symposium and the FNR construction contracting workshop is free of charge. Registration is required.
The workshop complements the current FNR seminar series "On course for the future: public building with wood", which is carried out within the framework of the Charter for Wood 2.0 and in cooperation with the municipal umbrella organisations and the Wood Information Service. The offer is free of charge. Further information on the seminar series can be found at: https://veranstaltungen.fnr.de/holzbau.
