Groundbreaking ceremony for the world's tallest wooden skyscraper

84 metre high building in Vienna's new "Seestadt Aspern" district

After around two years of development, the ground-breaking ceremony has now been held to mark the start of the flagship HoHo project in Vienna. By 2018, around 20,000 square metres of rental space will be created on 24 levels using timber hybrid construction.

In the Ecological model settlement in Prinz Eugen Park in Munich, a total of more than 600 residential units are to be built in timber or timber hybrid construction. According to the Mikado article, all plots of land for the model housing estate, which is up to seven storeys high, have already been allocated.

State government adopts sustainability strategy for NRW

In June 2016, the state government adopted a sustainability strategy for NRW. It is the first federal state to commit to implementing the global sustainability goals of the United Nations and has defined a system of targets and indicators for key areas of action.

Here are two of seven focus areas:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions; target: reduce greenhouse gases by at least 25 per cent by 2020 and by 80 per cent by 2050Environmental strategyBiodiversity strategy
  • Size of settlement and transport areas; target: limit land use for settlement and transport to an average of five hectares per day by 2020

In future, IT.NRW will present an up-to-date indicator report on sustainability in NRW every two years. The sustainability strategy will be updated every four years.

DBU: Affordable energy-efficient housing and transport transition as key to sustainable development

"Well-insulated and energy-efficient modern housing must remain affordable for poorer people. This is crucial, said DBU Secretary General Dr Heinrich Bottermann at the expert forum "Urban spaces in the face of climate change", to ensure that society does not become divided. He also emphasised how important it is for climate-neutral and resource-conserving neighbourhood development to rely more on timber construction and to push back concrete buildings. "If concrete, then only recycled concrete," emphasised Bottermann."

Dr Lars Grotewold, climate protection expert at the Mercator Foundation, spoke out in favour of a transport revolution in cities. Despite all efficiency efforts, transport still causes as many emissions as it did 25 years ago. Grotewold's ambitious demand: "By the middle of the century, the transport sector must be completely CO2-be free."
