Haveneiland East and West in Amsterdam

1087 Amsterdam, Netherlands: Haveneiland is the eastern and western part of the newest district "IJburg" in the east of Amsterdam. It was developed in the course of the Dutch housing development programme "VINEX "*. "Haveneiland", as well as "Steigereiland" and "Rieteilanden", was built on an artificially washed up island. Completion: ~2018

In the first phase of construction, about 10,000 apartments for ~25,000 residents and infrastructure such as schools, library, sports facilities, bathing beach (in the northeast of Haveneiland), shops were completed by 2018.

Further islands with housing for 20,000 inhabitants have been or will be washed up in the northeast: Centrumeiland and Strandeiland (1.5 km²), as well as Buiteneiland as a pure nature reserve. They are to be built on from around 2020 and 2022 respectively. Close by (to the south) is Amsterdam's largest nature and city park, Diemerpark.

*Note: VINEX (Vierde Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening Extra) is a Dutch housing programme launched in 1993 by the Dutch Ministry of Housing (Ministerie van Volkshuisvesting, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieubeheer) with the aim of building around 750,000 new homes nationwide.

Sustainable aspects have hardly played a role in this urban expansion (apart from the fact that the proximity of the apartments to the city centre of Amsterdam can save quite a few car journeys). PV systems or grass roofs are almost impossible to get in front of the lens here, sometimes at least the one or other wooden façade. In the Netherlands, however, there is a much stronger tendency to try out something new in terms of design than in most other European countries. And since the new housing estate "IJburg" is one of the largest building areas in Europe, there are a lot of interesting buildings and new, partly experimental or innovative architecture to be discovered here. It is interesting that socially subsidized housing is also located next to condominiums in this part of town, without it being immediately noticeable in terms of design.
