81829 Munich: New development area on the site of the former Riem Airport on a planning area of 556 ha. There are plans for 6,500 apartments for 15,000 residents, mainly in multi-storey housing, and jobs for 13,000 employees. In 2014, there were more than 12,000 residents. Developing the district sustainably was a central theme of Messestadt Riem. Several evaluations of Messestadt Riem took place (see pdf links below). Completion: 2018
Of a total of 200 planned "car-free living" units in the new development area (also known as Messestadt) of Munich-Riem, 24 condominiums and 28 cooperative apartments (Wogeno) have been built in the 1st construction phase according to the "living without a car" model, and since 2017 a further 14 car-free condominiums (www.autofrei-wohnen-4.de) have been completed in the 4th construction phase: www.wohnen-ohne-auto.de/autofreie_Wohnprojekte
In the second construction phase, the Women's Housing Cooperative with 49 apartments, 29 parking spaces and 8 cars. This was never advertised as an explicitly car-free project.
In the third construction phase, the Wagnis cooperative has about 95 apartments with about 60 parking spaces, and the number of cars is probably well below 50: www.wagnis.org
Both projects had received a reduction from the City in the required number of parking spaces of the underground parking spaces actually required by building code to approximately 60 %, but had to demonstrate that they could upgrade to 100% if needed.
