With efficiency, greater electrification and renewable energies, it is possible to organise completely greenhouse gas-neutral transport without having to accept restrictions on growth and quality of life. This is the result of scenarios developed by the Öko-Institut and presented today in Berlin by Parliamentary State Secretary Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter. The scenarios for greenhouse gas-neutral transport were developed together with key players from business and society.
Schwarzelühr-Sutter: "The options are there, the opportunities for the economy, the environment and people are great. Renewbility shows us that climate protection in transport is possible! And without sacrificing growth and prosperity, but on the contrary with a better quality of life. Climate protection in transport is no longer a question of whether. It's about how we design climate-neutral transport in the long term."
The results show: Complete decarbonisation of the transport sector is possible - and there are various options for achieving this. To achieve this, the energy basis of transport must be switched to renewable energies. And: Efficient vehicles and modes of transport must be prioritised. The latter is particularly important for two reasons. Firstly, it saves a lot of costs if renewable energies are not wasted unnecessarily. And secondly, it drastically improves the quality of life if, in addition to an energy transition, more environmentally friendly modes of transport are used.
Until now, it was often assumed that environmentally friendly transport would ultimately have to restrict the mobility of many people or the economy. The results of Renewbility disprove this. The research project shows that, on the contrary, greenhouse gas-neutral transport can actually promote growth and improve mobility and quality of life. Numerous discussions with stakeholders from politics, business and civil society form the basis for looking to the future. Suggestions from these discussions have set the direction. The results brochure, key graphics and further information can be found at www.renewbility.de .

For the third time, the Wood Construction Award Lower Saxony competition. The aim of the state-wide competition is to strengthen the use of wood as a climate-friendly and sustainable building material, to present the current state of timber construction and to inspire future builders to build with this unique raw material. The Lower Saxony Timber Construction Award 2020 honours structures and buildings that are predominantly made of wood and wood-based materials and stand out for their high design and timber construction quality, as well as taking particular account of ecological and resource-saving aspects in the interests of sustainability.
The prize is endowed with a total of 12,000 euros and is jointly offered by the Landesmarketingfonds Holz of the 3N Kompetenzzentrum Niedersachsen Netzwerk Nachwachsende Rohstoffe und Bioökonomie e.V. and the Landesbeirat Holz Niedersachsen e.V.. An independent jury of experts will award the Lower Saxony Timber Construction Prize 2020 and present recognitions in November.
To be eligible, the projects submitted must have been completed between January 2018 and June 2020 and the structure must be located in Lower Saxony. The call for entries runs until 30 June 2020.

According to the head of the EIB (European Investment Bank), Werner Hoyer, it is realistic to invest one trillion euros for climate protection within 10 years. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Hoyer said: "If we want to achieve our climate protection goals, we're no longer talking about billions, but trillions of euros" and "We can handle that." EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had named the climate protection target when she took office. Hoyer assumes that 1 trillion euro EU climate protection measures will trigger investments totalling 4 trillion euro.
Hoyer wants to mobilise additional money on the capital markets. "If we want to finance climate projects worth an average of 100 billion euros per year and the leverage that our investments trigger is around three, then the EIB would have to raise 30 to 35 billion euros per year," the bank boss told Der Spiegel. Already today, 28 per cent of the EIB's loans flow into projects that serve climate protection: "I want it to become 50 per cent in the future".
The EU target of investing 100 billion per year in climate protection was announced by the new head of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the 25th Climate Conference COP25 in Madrid. The EU is to become climate neutral by 2050. The EU's first climate protection law will be presented in March 2020.

With funding from the federal support programme "Unternehmen Revier", the Factor X agency of the development company has developed an internet-based tool for the simple calculation of the resource efficiency of one's own building project. The tool has now undergone final testing and will be available online from September.
With the Factor X construction method, the entire life cycle of buildings is considered, resulting in many new opportunities for saving raw materials and thus for climate- and resource-saving construction. Until now, the resource efficiency of buildings has been calculated using a spreadsheet as part of the Factor X Agency's construction consultancy service. This is now to be made even easier by the new online tool, which will be accessible to the public via the Internet. The database-based tool was realised with funding from the federal support programme "Unternehmen Revier".
At the invitation of the Fakor X agency, the almost completed online tool was subjected to a final test. Fifteen testers from science, administration and building practice checked the user guidance and calculated test buildings. The concept was praised by all testers. A few suggestions for improvement are still being incorporated into the programming before the online tool is released in September and will then be available.
Initiator Klaus Dosch, head of the Factor X Agency of the indeland development company, is enthusiastic: "Here we are setting up a tool for climate- and resource-friendly construction that does not yet exist in Europe. Even non-specialists interested in construction are supported by our tool in such a way that they can very easily calculate the resource efficiency of their building project. We have created a link to the building materials database of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). For the first time, we are making the construction life cycle understandable for laypeople."
Improving resource efficiency in the construction of housing estates is an essential part of the strategy of the indeland 2030 master plan of the development company indeland GmbH. A number of strategies lead to the achievement of these goals and have been tested in the Faktor X settlements in Eschweiler and Inden. With the development of strategies and projects for sustainable building and living, indeland has long since taken on a lighthouse function far beyond the region. Together with the exhibition already opened in May, the tool is intended to contribute to the illustration and dissemination of the Factor X strategies.
There are five Factor X settlements listed in the sdg21 web database:
