Extension in Berlin-Weißensee

13086 Berlin: after reunification, the estate was taken over again by Genossenschaftliches Wohnen Berlin-Süd eG (GeWoSüd), fundamentally renovated and extended by 87 apartments by adding an attic storey. In total, the estate consists of 457 apartments. Completion of the extension: 1996

Architecture: Carlos Zwick, Berlin
Execution planning of the extension in timber construction (1996): Bjerking Ingenjörsbyrå AB, Lübeck / Uppsala (S)

The housing estate in Weißensee is the second largest housing estate of GeWoSüd. It was built in the years 1927-29 in four construction phases on previously undeveloped farmland. The architects were Jakobus Goettel, Alfred Wiener, Hans Jaretzki and Werner Berndt. The complex is designed as a perimeter block development, which allows for generously landscaped inner block areas.

Energy and climate protection
After the energetic redevelopment, the renewal of the energy supply of the housing estate took place in 2009/2010.
Photovoltaic system: 280 kWp
Six combined heat and power units: 120 kWel / 280 kWth
In 2010, it was the largest roof-integrated PV system on a housing estate in Berlin and the third largest in Germany.
