Ireland no longer wants to make money from fossil fuels. With 90 votes in favour and 53 against, members of the Irish parliament voted in favour of a corresponding law last Thursday. According to the bill, the state-owned Strategic Investment Fund is to withdraw its money from fossil fuel investments. This would make the island state the first country to DivestmentThe aim is to realise the withdrawal of public funds from coal, oil and gas.
The fund has assets totalling eight billion euros. According to Pringle, around 17 per cent of the state fund is invested in fossil fuels. However, the law is not yet in force. The Finance Committee must first give its approval. Once it comes into force, the state fund will have five years to withdraw its money from fossil fuel investments. New investments in the sector would be prohibited in future.

The Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV) published a market estimate for electrically powered cargo bikes for the first time in addition to its sales figures for 2016 presented in March. The DLR writes: "The use of electric cargo bikes in inner-city freight transport holds great potential in terms of climate protection and the economic viability of courier and express services - this is the conclusion reached by scientists at the Institute for Transport Research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The project "I replace a car" tested the use of electric cargo bikes in courier and express services. There were 98% savings in consumption costs for car courier services.

On 5 November 1977 27 people, including lawyers from the anti-nuclear movement, members of various environmental movements and critical natural scientists, but also economists and representatives of the Protestant Church, founded the Öko-Institut in Freiburg. The aim was to provide the public with independent scientific advice and well-founded expert opinions.
Today, more than 165 employees at the Freiburg, Darmstadt and Berlin sites work across disciplines in the fields of energy and climate protection; immission and radiation protection; agriculture and biodiversity; sustainability in consumption, mobility, resource management and companies; nuclear technology and plant safety, chemicals management and technology assessment as well as law, policy and governance.
2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the Öko-Institut. The independent scientific institute, which works extensively on sustainability issues and plays an active role in shaping environmental policy, is celebrating its anniversary under the motto "We wish for something!"

A broad alliance of chambers, the housing industry, trade unions, environmental and nature conservation organisations as well as consumer and social associations came together in June 2016 to form the "NRW Building Alliance for Climate Protection". The aim of the alliance is to promote climate protection in the areas of housing and construction and to introduce jointly developed priorities into the political arena.
Energy-efficient refurbishment is an important and indispensable contribution to achieving climate protection targets. In addition to energy-efficient refurbishment as a central element in achieving the climate protection targets in NRW, energy-efficient new residential construction and the decentralised generation of renewable energy in residential and urban districts are also of great importance." Refurbishment concepts should therefore not only be considered on a building-by-building basis, but should also take into account the social, socio-cultural development and natural compatibility of the surrounding neighbourhood, its supply structure and residents."
