Dwindling raw materials, dwindling landfill space and ambitious climate protection targets make it essential to overcome the high use of resources in the construction industry. The film shows that there are already many ways to use building materials sustainably in the cycle: Recycled concrete, recycled gypsum, the reuse and recycling of bricks and the renewable raw material wood.
Around 60 percent of the resources used in Berlin are processed in the construction industry. This contrasts with millions of tonnes of building rubble and construction site waste. Every year, 2.2 million tons of primary raw materials are already saved in civil engineering and building construction in Berlin through the use of quality-assured secondary raw materials. But Berlin does not intend to stop there. By 2030, a further 1.4 million tonnes of primary materials are to be replaced by secondary raw materials each year.

The BUND yearbook Ökologisch Bauen & Renovieren (Ecological Building and Renovation) published by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) helps by making owners fit for discussions with the house bank, architect, energy consultant and craftsmen. The guidebook, which will be available from November, shows what can be done and how: Based on numerous house portraits, the annual compendium helps the reader to find out which measures, building materials and technologies are most suitable for their own project.
Written in an understandable way and clearly presented, with many examples and suggestions, the 244-page "BUND Yearbook 2019 - Ecological Building and Renovation" offers an all-round service for builders and renovators. The booklet offers six topics: basics/planning, model houses, green around the house, building envelope, building services and interior design. Furthermore, state funding opportunities are presented. With in the focus this time quarter concepts for less surface consumption and more togetherness stand. In addition, long-term experience with solar thermal energy and innovations in photovoltaics and solar power storage.
sdg21 comment: There is no comparable publication for the low costs. For this one must accept that a not insignificant part is occupied by advertisements, which are however thematically relevant. Strongly contradictory is however the request of the BUND to reduce the surface consumption, but then in the booklet almost throughout only examples of single-family houses to show. The few sustainable quarters, multi-storey residential buildings or housing estates are almost lost. The title "Neighborhood Concepts" promises more than the publication actually delivers.

In order to compare the carbon footprint with other solar technologies, all results must be converted into g CO2e/kWh. This value takes into account the lifetime electricity generation for a given location. For Southern Europe, HeliaSol® has a carbon footprint of only 5-7 g CO2e/kWh (7-9 g CO2e/kWh in Central Europe) and thus already significantly undercuts all current solar technologies.

Standard modules based on crystalline silicon achieve values of 40 - 100 g CO2e/kWh depending on the installation site and the origin of the modules. "With the planned improvement in our efficiency, we will further reduce the carbon footprint of our product to become the energy source with the lowest CO2 footprint - including hydropower, wind and solar energy. This is a truly green product," says Jan Birnstock, CTO of Heliatek.
Heliatek is currently installing the new production line for the series production of its unique OPV solar films. The production line is in the start-up phase and will produce organic solar films with an annual capacity of up to 1 million m² from mid-2020.
About the TÜV Rheinland life cycle assessment
TÜV Rheinland has certified Heliatek's HeliaSol® , as one of the first companies in the solar industry, in a life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040/44. This analysis provides a structured and comprehensive method for quantifying energy and material flows and their potential environmental impact. The LCA analyzes the environmental impact of all phases of a product's life, from raw material procurement, through production and use, to disposal at the end of the product's life, including all transport and delivery routes ("cradle-to-grave"). All site-related conversions of the TÜV values were carried out by Heliatek.

Germanwatch welcomes MEPs' call for a higher EU climate target for 2030 and greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050 at the latest
Bonn (25 October 2018). The European Parliament is stepping up the pace on climate action. MEPs today gave the EU negotiating delegation for the UN climate summit in Katowice in December a mandate in which they call for the EU to raise its greenhouse gas reduction target from the current 40 per cent (below 1990 levels) to 55 per cent. The parliamentarians are aiming for greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050 at the latest, which would mean reducing emissions to almost zero. "We are pleased that the MPs are responding directly to the findings of the latest IPCC report on the 1.5-degree target," says Christoph Bals, Political Director of Germanwatch. "This is a wake-up call for the German government. The Grand Coalition should now finally support the European Parliament, the European Commission and the progressive member states in raising the EU climate targets for 2030 and 2050. The success of the upcoming climate summit in Poland will depend in part on whether the EU comes forward," said Bals.
The European Parliament supports the climate targets that the plaintiffs in the People's Climate Case are also calling for to protect their fundamental rights. The European legislator's response is eagerly awaited these days. Christoph Bals: "We hope that the forthcoming response by the European Parliament and the Council will also be characterised by this new departure in climate policy."
In the People's Climate Case, people affected by climate change are petitioning the EU to raise its climate targets.
