ver.di expert opinion: Socially acceptable coal phase-out is feasible

A socially responsible coal phase-out is feasible and affordable, according to a report commissioned by ver.di.
"We expect that in none of the scenarios, even at peak times around 2030, will annual costs of more than 250 million euros be incurred for early retirement, but also for retraining and other career-related measures," explained ver.di Federal Executive Board member Andreas Scheidt.

5.3.2020 Munich: City Planning Councillor Professor Dr. (l) Elisabeth Merk has now symbolically handed over the key to the members of the building association "Der Kleine Prinz" in Prinz Eugen Park. Their new building ensemble of atrium and point houses on Jörg-Hube-Straße is part of the ecological model settlement there. In addition to flats, two guest flats, an ice cream café and a bicycle repair workshop were built.
"The ecological model housing estate is a kind of initial spark for further timber construction projects in the city, and with the 'Kleiner Prinzen' project, an outstanding showcase project for high-quality timber construction has been created - beyond the city's borders. This is due not least to the great commitment of all those involved and the successful cooperation as and with the building consortium," Merk emphasised at the handover of the keys, which was attended not only by the members of the building consortium but also by the architects involved from the architectural firm Dressler Mayerhofer Rössler.
Around 1,800 flats as well as a primary school, kindergartens and other facilities are being built in the new Prinz-Eugen-Park urban quarter. Among the developers are a total of six cooperatives and five joint building ventures. The ecological model settlement is made up of eight individual projects. Approximately 570 flats are being built here in timber construction, 407 of which are rental flats, and various community facilities.
The Schweighofer Prize rewards innovative ideas, technologies, products and services along the entire value chain with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the European forestry and timber industry.
The Schweighofer Prize has been awarded every two years since 2003 and is endowed with a total amount of € 300,000 before taxes. The Schweighofer Prize is divided into a main prize and several innovation prizes.
All natural persons and groups of persons, irrespective of their age, level of education or employment status, who have performed a service in accordance with the tender conditions are eligible to participate. Organisations may also submit entries. However, the main focus should be on people who have already achieved great things for the European forestry and timber industry or who are currently developing innovative solutions.
The BDA Prize for Architectural Criticism 2018 is awarded to the managing editor of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and book author Gerhard Matzig.
The BDA Prize for Architectural Criticism looks back on a history of over 50 years. The prize winners have included Julius Posener, Manfred Sack, Wolfgang Pehnt and Peter Sloterdijk. The prize honours "an outstanding achievement in the field of critical debate on questions of planning and building by journalistic means", as the statutes state. The BDA's "Critics' Prize" is in a series with the two other prizes that the BDA Federal Association awards alternately: the "Great BDA Prize" and the "BDA Architecture Prize Nike".
The BDA Prize for Architectural Criticism 2018 will be awarded at a ceremony on 16 June at 4 pm at the Schmidt Theater in Hamburg. The laudatory speech will be held by Dietmar Steiner. The award ceremony is embedded in the program of the 14th BDA Day 2018 in Hamburg.
