Exemplary sustainable procurement in the Berlin authorities

14.5 billion euros for social housing by 2026

Statement by Klara Geywitz on the 2022 budget and the key figures of the financial planning until 2026

The draft budget for 2022 and the key figures of the financial planning until 2026 provide a total of 14.5 billion euros in programme funds for social housing. With this, we will support the construction of 100,000 social housing units annually. This is more than three times the original financial planning, which had provided four billion euros until 2025. The 2022 budget lays the groundwork with two billion euros.
The federal and state governments want to create affordable and climate-friendly housing. Housing is one of the most important social issues of our time and must remain affordable. This is precisely where noticeable relief must be provided.

Construction does not happen overnight, which is why long-term planning security is crucial. The construction industry and the Länder receive my guarantee: we want to build and we will build. That's what the 14.5 billion euros are for.

In total, the budget of the BMWSB provides for expenditures of almost 4.9 billion euros for 2022, including 3.61 billion euros in investments that will strengthen the economy in Germany. The programme funds for urban development funding could be stabilised and secured at 790 million euros per year. The 14.5 billion for social housing construction is distributed as follows over the years: 2022 2 billion euros, 2023 2.5 billion euros, 2024 3 billion euros, 2025 3.5 billion euros and 2026 3.5 billion euros.

280,000 photovoltaic systems turn the sun into electricity in NRW

The use of solar energy is an important pillar in the energy mix of the future and for the concrete implementation of the energy transition. At the end of 2019, around 1.8 million solar power systems with an output of 49,873 megawatt peak (MWp) were installed across Germany. With around 45 billion kWh of climate-friendly electricity, these accounted for a share of just under eight percent of German electricity generation. This amount is mathematically sufficient to supply 12.8 million households with electrical energy for a year. The approximately 280,000 turbines installed in NRW had an output of around 5,300 megawatt peak.

6/2014 Swedish housing association awards major timber construction contractSwedish housing association Rikshem Ab has signed a major contract with the northern Swedish timber construction company Lindbäcks Bygg, Piteå, to build 2,000 rental flats across the country over the next five years. The volume of the order is estimated at SEK 2 billion (equivalent to around EUR 220 million). The contract includes an option for a further 500 units. The rental flats are to be built in the country's urban centres, primarily in the capital region and the Öresund region in the south, where there is a housing shortage. Lindbäcks Bygg is a family business that was founded in 1924 as a village sawmill and generated sales of SEK 600 million in 2013 with around 200 employees. Lindbäcks started building industrially prefabricated wooden apartment blocks 20 years ago.

2/2014 Fuel cells: The world's largest fuel cell park has gone into operation in South Korea. The plant was built by the American company Fuelcell Energy in Hwaseong City. With an output of 59 megawatts, the plant converts natural gas into electricity and heat and is said to be particularly efficient. (Bloomberg)

Europe's largest ecological neighbourhood is being built in France
A sustainable neighbourhood is to be built on more than 200 hectares for 30,000 private individuals in Montreuil, France. The neighbourhood is part of a new development area covering a total of 892 hectares and is being funded with 3.5 million euros from the NQU initiative (Nouveaux Quartiers Urbains = New Urban Districts).
