Seven years without a private car - How my life has changed since then
Published
It's an attitude to life: without a car, but with a bicycle. When the brakes of my car rusted due to too long a standstill, it was clear: I don't need one any more. What is the point of having a car [...]?
On Saturday, 14 September, the RENN.west campaign "Goals need action" was launched in Dortmund. It informs about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and mobilizes people for their implementation. Prominent supporters are the BVB, the multiple boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko and the top model Elena Carrière.
What has to happen when BVB, multiple boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko and German top model Elena Carrière support a campaign together? Then it's crunch time! Translated: a time when really important things have to be done. Not tomorrow or next week, but now! Not by anyone, but by us - by you, by me, and worldwide!
"Goals need action" is the name of the campaign of the Regional Network Units for Sustainability Strategies (RENN.west), which calls for support for the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. By 2030, for example, poverty and hunger in the world must be significantly reduced. Equality must become an everyday reality and inequalities must be eliminated, the extinction of animals and plants and climate change must be stopped. The 17 SDGs call for big goals that can only be achieved through action!
The campaign launch took place on Saturday, 14 September at the cooperation partner BVB in Dortmund's SIGNAL IDUNA PARK at the Bundesliga match Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen. Also present: Prof. Dr. Günther Bachmann, Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development. In the following weeks, the campaign will be on display at various football stadiums in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, as well as at selected railway stations, on buses and trains. In addition, extensive, playful information material on the Sustainable Development Goals will be presented at various events. For this purpose, the regeneratively powered RENN.mobil from the StreetScooter company, exclusive electric mobility partner of the campaign, will be on the road until the end of December.
About RENN.west: RENN.west is a network of sustainability actors in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. It was founded in 2016 with the new edition of the German Sustainability Strategy together with three other networks (RENN.nord, RENN.süd, RENN.mitte). The aim of RENN is to further develop the political framework for sustainable development in Germany. www.renn-netzwerk.de/west/
Holzbau Deutschland promotes resource-conserving use of wood
"The raw material wood is precious. It is therefore important to use it responsibly and in a way that conserves resources," warns Peter Aicher, Chairman of Holzbau Deutschland. Even if wood is affected by environmental influences or the bark beetle, it does not represent an inferior raw material, but has almost identical properties to conventional construction timber. "If the so-called 'calamity wood' has the same structural quality in terms of load-bearing capacity as conventional sawn timber, it can be used without restrictions," explains Aicher. In addition, the wood retains its important function as a CO2 sink, regardless of external impairments.
"If the wood is used as a building material, the carbon bound in the wood remains stored there in the long term, thereby significantly reducing the burden on the environment."
The goal must be an economically and ecologically sensible and efficient use of the domestic resource. In the interests of sustainability and climate protection, regional wood resources should therefore be used optimally.
Calamity wood is of high quality and can be used without restrictions
In most cases, bark beetle infestation is irrelevant for the use of the wood as a building material. The bark beetle lays its burrows in the bast, i.e. the area between the bark (bark) and the trunk, but not in the load-bearing wood itself. In addition, the sawn timber is technically dried during further processing. During this process at the latest, any remaining populations of insect pests are reliably killed off, so that beetle-free timber processed into sawn timber is guaranteed to be beetle-free. Every piece of sawn timber - regardless of its origin - must meet the criteria of DIN standard 4074 in order to be used as load-bearing timber in a building. In some cases, the wood turns a slightly bluish colour after a bark beetle infestation. It can then be used in the non-visible area.
Environmental factors and the effects of climate change have further facilitated the mass spread of the bark beetle in the past year. In most cases, rapid felling of the affected trees is the only alternative to stop the further spread of the pest. The logs are immediately removed from the forest and stored. This results in an oversupply of so-called 'beetle wood'. The prompt further processing of the calamity wood into sawn timber is an active contribution to climate protection.
Holzbau Deutschland appeals to the public sector as well as to architects and builders to make greater use of regional calamity wood and to specify this in tenders. The use of domestic calamity wood not only supports regional value creation, but is also a sign of solidarity with regional forest owners.
The Federal Environment Agency's publication "Urban Mining" was published in July 2017 and explains the possibilities of extracting raw materials in urban areas, for example from buildings, infrastructure and durable consumer and capital goods. While waste management is essentially concerned with the volume of waste, urban mining looks at the total stock of durable goods. The aim is to forecast future material flows as early as possible and to develop and establish the best possible recycling routes on this basis.
According to the Federal Environment Agency, five key questions on urban mining need to be answered at an early stage so that the potential of this concept can be strategically realised. Questions were identified regarding the location, nature and release of anthropogenic deposits, the players involved and the technical, logistical and organisational requirements.
The brochure is intended to convey an understanding of urban mining and to encourage the pursuit of this strategic approach. The Federal Environment Agency is striving for a strategic and interdisciplinary approach to urban mining.
The city of Frankfurt is initiating the largest urban development project of recent decades: In the northwest, 550 hectares of current agricultural land between the Frankfurt districts of Niederursel and Praunheim and the neighboring towns of Steinbach and Oberursel are to be turned into a neighborhood with up to 11,400 apartments.
It will be interesting to see whether sustainability criteria will play a role in the new district. Frankfurt is well positioned in the energy sector, but in the other areas I see a need to catch up compared to other municipalities.
