German Building Owner Award 2018 "High Quality - Affordable Costs" in Residential Construction
Published
Closing date for entries is 1 June 2017
Housing has become a public issue like it hasn't been for years. That is why the competition for the German Building Owner Award 2018 has come at the right time. It is organised by the working group KOOPERATION GdW Bundesverband deutscher Wohnungs- und Immobilienunternehmen, Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA and Deutscher Städtetag (DST).
Initially offered without differentiation, the prize has been awarded in the categories "New Construction" and "Modernisation" since 1997. Due to the increasing complexity and interpenetration of new construction and modernisation projects, this separation will be waived in the 2018 competition. Pure new construction or modernisation projects as well as mixed forms can be submitted.
The organisers invite all interested parties to take part in this competition, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.
German Building Award - the most important prize in the field of residential construction in Germany
The competition for the German Building Owners' Award is based on the conflicting priorities of high quality and affordable costs, and aims to highlight the special role of building owners. The working group KOOPERATION GdW-BDA-DST launched this competition in 1986 to support positive approaches and solutions in housing construction.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE presented the fourth edition of their study on the cost price of electricity from renewable sources on March 20, 2018. In it, they analyze current costs and forecast further developments based on technology-specific learning rates and market scenarios up to the year 2035. "The cost forecasts of the previous studies have been confirmed.
The cost price of electricity from renewable energies is falling continuously and is no longer an obstacle to CO₂-free electricity generation. Newly constructed photovoltaic plants and onshore wind turbines at favourable locations are already cheaper than fossil-fuel power plants, and this trend will increase significantly by 2035," says project manager Dr Christoph Kost.
The ever-improving competitive position of renewables is leading to new applications and rapidly growing markets that are no longer dependent on subsidies. On the other hand, the full-load hours of conventional power plants continue to decline due to a higher share of renewables, which drives up their costs. In addition, fuel and CO2-certificate prices. "It can be assumed that not necessarily the cheapest conventional form of generation will exist on the market to complement the fluctuating renewables, but the one that can show a high flexibility in terms of start-up and shut-down variability, i.e. preferably power plants based on natural gas", says Dr. Christoph Kost.
Currently, PV systems achieve electricity production costs of between 3.71 and 11.54 € cents/kWh, depending on the system type and global radiation - which in Germany is between 950 and 1,300 kWh/(m²a). The specific system costs are between €600 and €1,400/kWp, depending on the system type.
From 2030 onwards, the LCOE for PV systems will fall below 4.7 cents/kWh for
rooftop systems or 2.41 € cents/kWh for ground-mounted systems. The specific system costs will fall to between €350 and €815/kWp by 2035.

The Federal Award ENVIRONMENT & BUILDING initiated by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) under the patronage of Federal Minister Svenja Schulze honors projects that already realize the idea of a new Bauhaus in the sense of holistically sustainable buildings. In 2021, the prize will be awarded for the second time, this time in four categories. All players in the building sector are eligible to apply. The closing date for entries is 25 May 2021.. The prize will be awarded on 7 September by Parliamentary State Secretary Florian Pronold and UBA President Dirk Messner.
The discussion about the climate, environmental and health impacts of buildings and their construction has long since reached the centre of society. Topics such as primary energy demand, grey energy or healthy building are no longer just the preserve of experts, but are also attracting the attention of more and more private and public building owners. And rightly so - because the building sector consumes enormous raw material and energy resources, and building products can be harmful to the environment and health. Sustainable solutions already exist today and are already being implemented. The Federal ENVIRONMENT & BUILDING Award therefore honours lighthouse projects in the field of sustainable building and helps to bring the EU Commission's vision of a "New European Bauhaus" to life.
About the Federal Award
This year, the Federal Award will again be presented in the categories "Residential Buildings", "Non-residential Buildings" and "Neighbourhoods". A fourth category, "Climate-friendly refurbishment", is new. In addition to these competition categories, the jury may award special prizes for particularly innovative approaches among the projects submitted.
Conditions of participation
Due to the thematic breadth, all actors in the building sector are invited to apply: from builders and developers to offices for architecture, building services engineering, urban or landscape planning to manufacturers or research institutions. The call for entries is aimed at buildings that have already been completed in Germany or neighbourhoods that are at an advanced stage of planning; multiple applications in different categories are possible (also applies to refurbishment projects!).
What awaits the winners
The award winners will receive public attention on several levels. The award ceremony will take place on 7 September 2021 at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in Berlin, where the award-winning projects will be presented to experts and the media. The award-winning projects will also be featured on the websites of UBA and the Federal Environment Ministry. UBA is having films made on the award-winning sustainability examples, which the winners can then use for their own public relations work. Furthermore, all award-winning projects will be documented in a book.

The Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction today announced the Federal Urban Greening Award 2022. This year, the focus is on the topic of "Climate adaptation and quality of life".
Federal Minister Klara Geywitz: "Climate change is a stress test for our cities. We need more trees for a better urban climate, we need soils that can absorb heavy rainfall, we need less sealed land also for more biodiversity and against the heating up of residential neighbourhoods. With the Federal Urban Greening Award 2022, we are honouring the pioneering work that is already shaping the necessary transformation of cities today."
The award recognises best practice examples that show how municipalities can use their urban green spaces to positively influence the urban climate and reduce the negative effects of extreme weather conditions. The award also recognises innovative concepts for climate-adapted and vital urban green spaces that have already been tried and tested. The award is looking for open spaces that can be used by the public and that also meet the other requirements for the use of open spaces in cities and municipalities, including as spaces for recreation and social cohesion and as elements of an attractive network of cycle paths and footpaths. Cities and municipalities in Germany can now apply with their projects. Planning offices, citizens, universities, research institutions, initiatives or associations can participate in cooperation with their municipalities.
Subject to the funds available in the 2022 federal budget, the federal prize is endowed with prize money totalling up to 100,000 euros. In addition to exemplary implemented projects, the courage to experiment with promising new approaches is also rewarded.
An independent jury will decide in June 2022 which projects will be awarded prizes and recognition. It is composed of experts from the fields of garden and landscape architecture, climate adaptation, urban development and urban planning, representatives of the municipal umbrella organisations and from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Berlin in September 2022.
The Federal Urban Greening Award is an important building block in the implementation of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs' White Paper on Urban Greening. It is supported by the German Association of Cities and Towns, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities and the German Association of Districts. The Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) implements the Federal Urban Greening Award and provides technical support.
