Quartier Zukunft - Reallabor Karlsruhe Oststadt

The Contact Point of the KIT Project "Quartier Zukunft" in the Oststadt of KarlsruheIn-Entstehung_gr100px_200dpiD - 76131 Karlsruhe-Oststadt: In Karlsruhe, the "Quartier Zukunft" real laboratory has been under construction since 2013, where the city life of the future is being tested and developed. The city of the future has largely been built in Europe. This means that the great task of sustainable urban development lies in the transformation of the existing.

The central concern of the "Quartier Zukunft" real laboratory is to initiate a "dense" or also "compact sustainability" in two dimensions in an existing typical European urban district. The cooperative research and development project aims to transform an existing urban district into a sustainable urban quarter in an open and long-term process. The focus here is on the joint action of the entire urban society, especially the citizens. Comprehensive and integrative sustainable urban development can only succeed if many contribute. The project takes sustainable development seriously as a guiding principle developed by the United Nations and would like - scientifically founded - to consider ecological, social, economic, cultural and institutional concerns in Karlsruhe together and integratively and to fill them with life.

The Quartier Zukunft - Labor Stadt has so far been working on the following topics of sustainable urban district development:

  • City in climate change
  • Economy in the city
  • Urban energy landscapes
  • Mobile city
  • Circular City
  • Consumption in the city
  • Post-growth city
  • Built city
  • Changing values Sustainability
  • Urban Technology
  • Healthy city
  • Living in the city
  • Shaping the city
  • Socially just city

The team is interdisciplinary and consists of experts from the fields of civil engineering, philosophy, environmental sciences, architecture, geoecology and geography. The project sponsor is the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

In May 2017, the "Reallabor 131: KIT finds a city" was honored twice by the German Federal Government's Council for Sustainable Development (RNE): with the quality seal "Project Sustainability 2017" and as one of four transformation projects that the jury considers to have particularly great potential to make the world more sustainable.
