In cooperation between the TU Darmstadt and the Institute Housing and Environment (IWU), the endowed junior professorship "Models of Housing and Energy Policy in Cities" was established and filled by the scientist Kai Schulze. He teaches and conducts research at the Institute of Political Science in the Department of Social and Historical Sciences at TU Darmstadt.
Schulze's research focuses on environmental and energy policy analysis. To this end, he combines theories and approaches of policy analysis, comparative politics and Europeanisation. The junior professorship could also build thematic bridges to the engineering sciences. At the same time, the Institute Housing and Environment expects valuable impulses. The IWU, a non-profit institute financed by the State of Hesse and the City of Darmstadt, conducts interdisciplinary research on the housing market and housing policy as well as on the efficient use of energy in buildings. "From the cooperation with the endowed junior professorship, we hope to make valuable contributions to make findings from research more usable for policy and societal advice," says Dr. Monika Meyer, managing director of IWU. The Institute will bear the personnel costs of the junior professorship, which is initially limited to three years and can be extended for a further three years.

G7 Environment Ministers issue far-reaching declaration: 1.5 degree limit to be the focus of action - progress also to be made on international climate financing before the World Climate Summit
Bonn/Berlin (21 May 2021). The G7 environment ministers today agreed on a far-reaching declaration on the implementation of climate targets: It focuses on the goal of keeping the 1.5 degree limit within reach. "The race towards greenhouse gas neutrality is accelerating," says Christoph Bals, Political Director of the environment and development organization Germanwatch. "It is very encouraging that the announcement of targets is backed up with concrete decisions to stop international coal finance and the announcement of additional climate finance. It is important that the heads of government at the G7 summit also get behind these announcements."
The statement says that there will be no more international coal financing as early as the end of this year. This is a huge turnaround, especially for Japan, the second-largest international financier of coal after China. The next step is to cancel international financing for all fossil fuels. All G7 countries have also pledged to phase out coal, oil and gas in the power sector in the 2030s. The multilateral development banks are called upon to implement the 1.5 degree pathway in their policies. At the same time, the G7 countries hold out the prospect of putting additional international climate finance for climate protection and adaptation on the table well before the climate summit in Glasgow.

Bonn/Düsseldorf. Who doesn't dream of this? To become independent of the electricity supplier and to use all the electricity you produce yourself. A new 5-minute video from the EnergyAgency.NRW introduces homeowner Thomas Koch from Bonn, who has almost fulfilled this dream. With his photovoltaic system on the roof and his battery storage in the cellar, he is up to 90 percent self-sufficient from his energy supplier.
The reason for this is the falling prices for storage technology. With production costs of only around 20 cents per kilowatt hour, it is worth generating and storing electricity yourself and being able to use it at any time - even when the sun is not shining. In fact, every kilowatt hour that does not have to be stored for the evening hours only costs around 11-12 cents to generate.
With its 91 PV modules and matching lithium-ion battery, it is now almost completely self-sufficient in solar power.
The video gives experts a chance to talk about the planning, installation and maintenance of battery storage systems in the home, charging times, guarantees and subsidies, and provides recommendations for action.

Anyone who submits their subsidy application by the end of September can still benefit from the highest subsidy. This applies to battery storage systems with which the electricity from your own roof can also be used after sunset. Funds are available in the KfW 275" development programme made available. Currently, 16 percent of the eligible costs are covered by a repayment subsidy as part of the loan programme. From October, this will be reduced to 13 per cent; at the turn of the year, the rate will fall to ten per cent. The subsidy will expire at the end of 2018.
