The exhibition marking the halfway point of the IBA Heidelberg has opened: A rich accompanying programme attracted almost 1000 visitors from Thursday to Saturday, many of whom were visiting the exhibition venue, the Mark Twain Center in Heidelberg's Südstadt, for the first time.
The IBA SUMMIT, the biennial meeting of mayors, university rectors and urban planners from international "Knowledge Pearls" in Heidelberg, heralded the opening days of the IBA interim presentation on 26 April. Prof. Dr Eckart Würzner, Lord Mayor of the City of Heidelberg welcomed the guests from Stanford, Cambridge, Lund and Leuven with an introduction to the IBA: "The IBA Heidelberg is on an excellent path. It demonstrates how various strengths of our city can be interwoven. These include, for example, promoting education, developing environmentally friendly mobility, creating new living space and promoting climate-neutral urban development. The IBA has made a significant contribution to the sense of a new beginning in Heidelberg.
The vernissage of the exhibition took place at the Mark Twain Center on the evening of 27 April. Gunther Adler, State Secretary for Building, Housing and Urban Development in the Federal Ministry of the Interior spoke on the occasion about the "IBA" format from the federal government's point of view. According to Adler, the IBA is an important piece of German building culture that enjoys international renown and is worth every effort to pursue its claim to excellence. The IBA tradition encompasses many aspects: International relevance, next-practice projects, sustainable impact on the region and building culture standards. For the IBAs currently underway, it is sometimes difficult to fully meet these claims to excellence under the given framework conditions. "Nevertheless, we are seeing overwhelming results, which encourage us as a federal government to continue the quality offensive together - also within the framework of the IBA Heidelberg," the State Secretary emphasised. "We need the IBA to show us how we can find answers to relevant questions of current urban development using new and unusual methods and means - this is more urgent today than ever. The IBA's courage to experiment and to go beyond existing boundaries is important to address the quality of living, working and living in our cities in the future."

Michael Braum, Managing Director of the IBA Heidelberg, was pleased about the great response to the exhibition opening and welcomed the guests: "Innovation in the knowledge society uses its intellectual and creative resources. This changes the value system of the industrial society, in which diligence stood above creativity. Today, in the knowledge society, creativity may be more important than diligence. This also has implications for the city. Our cities will change more dynamically in the 21st century than they did in the course of industrialisation. This requires a new way of thinking in urban planning and architecture. The IBA would like to make a contribution to this, which can now be seen in this exhibition."
Carl Zillich, Curatorial Director of the IBA Heidelbergexplained the exhibition concept: "Before we present realised building projects for the knowledge city of tomorrow in 2022, we have focused at the halfway point on the actors, processes and ideas of the first five years. Together with the exhibition makers from 'Stiftung Freizeit', we have developed analogue and at the same time interactive forms of presentation. Thus, for different interests, individual glimpses behind the scenes of the IBA, the urban development of international science cities, but also Heidelberg institutions and initiatives are on offer. Numerous architectural models, pictures and plans have already aroused curiosity about the construction sites, which are now marked all over the city."
The opening days closed on Saturday, 28 April with a colourful programme, during which many young families in particular got an impression of the exhibition and the IBA projects.
The exhibition of the IBA interim presentation is now open until 8 July daily from Tuesdays to Sundays from 15.00 - 20.00, including public holidays.

Constance receives project funding for "Hafner KliEn" from the Federal Government's 7th Energy Research Programme
The city of Constance strives for sustainable urban development. In the area of energy policy decisions and climate protection, this should include consideration of the triad of sufficiency, efficiency and substitution. This also and above all applies to the new Hafner district, which, in addition to 15 hectares of commercial land, also includes around 45 hectares of residential land.
Here, it is the city's declared goal to develop a climate-neutral neighbourhood in the overall balance. Early on in the process, relevant foundations were laid at the planning level and in the processes in order to think about this goal in an integrated way with all relevant subject areas and to develop corresponding concepts.
The research project "Hafner KliEn" aims to develop transferable concepts and practical solutions. The project title "KliEn" is composed of the goal "Hafner, climate-neutral and energy-efficient". For the first time in Germany, the feasibility of achieving these goals is being demonstrated in a neighbourhood of this size. An integral conceptual approach is to be developed that considers the entire life cycle of buildings, infrastructure and operating phase in a total system context. With a detailed project description, the City of Constance - supported by the Steinbeis Innovation Centre from Stuttgart - together with other partners from science and practice applied in January 2020 for funding within the framework of the 7th Energy Research Programme of the German Federal Government. At the end of November, the funding for the entire research network was approved for a total of two million euros. "We are very pleased about the recognition for the most sustainable and largest neighbourhood in Constance. The funding of 2 million enables us to tackle this ambitious goal with numerous partners. We are creating affordable housing for about 6,000 people in ecologically and energetically exemplary construction. The goal of climate neutrality is forward-looking. Especially against the backdrop of urban change, this project is of utmost importance for the housing action programme," says Karl Langensteiner-Schönborn, Mayor of the City of Hamburg, about the commitment.
In addition to the city administration, the following partners are involved in the project: The Steinbeis Innovation Centre, Stadtwerke Konstanz, HTWG and the University of Konstanz. The project partners are also pleased about the funding commitment. Dr. Norbert Reuter, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Konstanz, is one of them: "The funding enables us to develop a largely climate-neutral neighbourhood for the largest settlement expansion area in the city of Konstanz. We are very pleased to be able to help shape this path for the important areas of energy and heat supply as well as mobility." Solar Energy Promotion Association of Bavaria (SeV) organises the competition for architecturally and technically sophisticated solar energy systems for the 7th time, with prize money of 27,000 euros
The utilisation of solar energy in and on buildings is a key issue in the context of energy-efficient construction. Solar technology systems should be a natural part of innovative building envelopes as well as components of energy-efficient refurbishment.
The task is to find adequate design realisations for these technical innovations. By integrating solar energy systems into roofs and/or façades in an architecturally and technically sophisticated way, architects can increase awareness of the connection between buildings and solar technology among building owners and the general public and thus help renewable energies to become more widespread.
To increase acceptance and further spread the topic, the SeV is organising the "Building-integrated solar technology 2017" architecture prize.
All architects, owners/operators and solar technology companies - private or commercial, industrial or public - with at least one solar system (solar electricity and/or solar heat) that forms an integral part of the building are eligible to participate worldwide. Commissioning, i.e. the verifiable first energy supply of this system, must have taken place in the period from 1 January 2014 to 30 June 2017.
The closing date for the competition is 31 July 2017.
The first prize is endowed with 15,000 euros, a further 10,000 euros are earmarked for recognition prizes, and an additional 2,000 euros will be made available for a student project.
