The whole speech of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann at the start of the timber construction offensive in Baden-Württemberg
Minister President Winfried Kretschmann presented the new timber construction offensive in Baden-Württemberg in his speech at the 40th Holzbau BW symposium in Stuttgart on 7 November 2018 and outlined the importance of timber construction for Baden-Württemberg. In future, public buildings are to be realised as far as possible in timber or timber hybrid construction. 16.6 million euros in subsidies are available. "The state has a role model function to utilise the potential of timber construction to achieve climate protection targets." In addition to the most timber construction-friendly state building regulations, Baden-Württemberg is now taking a further consistent step to promote the environmentally friendly building material with its timber construction offensive. A Federal Council initiative is intended to promote timber construction at federal level.
On 30.6. the field test started in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia. For one year, scientists coordinate the operation of three combined heat and power plants with the use of three heat pumps, a PV system, a large lithium-ion storage unit and a private electric storage heating system to balance the PV and wind feed-in.
For this purpose, the combined heat and power plants use the heat storage capacity of the connected consumers: a leisure pool, an indoor swimming pool and a local heating network. Current weather forecasts are used to calculate optimal schedules for the individual plants. These schedules are sent to the plants via the internet and implemented on site. The loads on the electricity grid can also be taken into account, so that the much-discussed expansion of power lines in the electricity grid can be reduced in the long term.

The Special price on the topic "Urban development revisited: Prices - Practice - Perspectives" was given to the project Urban development area Stuttgarter Straße, French Quarter in Tübingen. The special prize, which is awarded in parallel to the urban development prize, serves to highlight particularly urgent fields of action in urban development and urban planning. It was awarded on 23.4.2021 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the German Urban Development Prize to contributions that had already been recognised with prizes and awards between 1980 and 2010. The judging of the special prize was very complex, as it had to cover a span of 30 years, i.e. a generation, of the achievements of German urban development that were considered outstanding at the time, and, in retrospect, it had to be based on robust, objective criteria that could adequately reflect the complexity of 30 years of urban development history and 30 years of urban development models.
"The robust urban design concept and the qualities of the public space are the hallmarks of the quarter, which exudes great liveliness. When strolling through the district, one has the certainty that it will gain in popularity and vitality as it ages," was the jury's verdict for the project. Thirty years after the competition for the French Quarter in Tübingen [urban development prize winner from the 2001 submission], the idea of parcelling proves to be a recipe for success with a high degree of suitability for everyday use and exemplary for participatory-oriented urban development in Germany.
Online tool simplifies calculation of resource efficiency
With funding from the federal support programme "Unternehmen Revier", the Factor X agency of the development company has developed an internet-based tool for the simple calculation of the resource efficiency of one's own building project. The tool has now undergone final testing and will be available online from September.
With the Factor X construction method, the entire life cycle of buildings is considered, resulting in many new opportunities for saving raw materials and thus for climate- and resource-saving construction. Until now, the resource efficiency of buildings has been calculated using a spreadsheet as part of the Factor X Agency's construction consultancy service. This is now to be made even easier by the new online tool, which will be accessible to the public via the Internet. The database-based tool was realised with funding from the federal support programme "Unternehmen Revier".
At the invitation of the Fakor X agency, the almost completed online tool was subjected to a final test. Fifteen testers from science, administration and building practice checked the user guidance and calculated test buildings. The concept was praised by all testers. A few suggestions for improvement are still being incorporated into the programming before the online tool is released in September and will then be available.
Initiator Klaus Dosch, head of the Factor X Agency of the indeland development company, is enthusiastic: "Here we are setting up a tool for climate- and resource-friendly construction that does not yet exist in Europe. Even non-specialists interested in construction are supported by our tool in such a way that they can very easily calculate the resource efficiency of their building project. We have created a link to the building materials database of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). For the first time, we are making the construction life cycle understandable for laypeople."
Improving resource efficiency in the construction of housing estates is an essential part of the strategy of the indeland 2030 master plan of the development company indeland GmbH. A number of strategies lead to the achievement of these goals and have been tested in the Faktor X settlements in Eschweiler and Inden. With the development of strategies and projects for sustainable building and living, indeland has long since taken on a lighthouse function far beyond the region. Together with the exhibition already opened in May, the tool is intended to contribute to the illustration and dissemination of the Factor X strategies.
The planners' workshop embedded in the participation process for Viktoriakarree will take place between 31 August and 2 September. During these three days, four teams of planners will develop an independent planning concept on site, taking into account the results of the previous participation processes.
The planner workshop will open with the planner workshop kick-off event on Thursday, 31 August 2017, at 6.30 pm in the St. Remigius Chapter House. The evening event offers the opportunity to get to know the four planner teams and to find out about further opportunities for participation during the planner workshop. The evening will also address two of the main topics of the participation process to date, for which opposing views became apparent during the ideas workshop. The topics of "culture/education/history/leisure" and "work/commerce" will be explored in greater depth in two open discussion rounds, which will also involve the audience. The aim is to work out the conflicts of interest and commonalities in order to give all those present and, above all, the planning teams from outside the area an insight into the interests.
