IGA building exhibition Stuttgart

iga-stuttgart_270191 Stuttgart: Building exhibition "Wohnen 2000" for the IGA-Bundesgartenschau 1993, 103 units, Szyszkowitz-Kowalski, HSS, LogID, Mecanoo, Tegnestue Vandkunsten and other architects, completion: 1993

The theme for the "Wohnen 2000" exhibition was: ecology and the change in modern lifestyles. A colourful, modern housing estate complex was created at moderate prices in rented housing of 15 DM/m² cold rent at that time. Each of the 13 apartments and 3 maisonettes has a service zone and a lounge area.

Architects 14 architectural offices from 11 European countries participated:
- Szyszkowitz and Kowalski
- HSS (Manfred Hegger)
- LogID (Dieter Schempp)
- Mecanoo
- Tegnestue Vandkunsten
Property developers and financing - Stuttgart Housing and Settlement Association
- housing association
- state development corporation
- Non-profit building cooperative Flüwo
The city sold the land below market price. Neither the federal government nor the state of Baden-Württemberg were financially involved in the project.

Special features The settlement was built as part of the "experimental housing construction" as a "model settlement in a disadvantaged location". Acoustic and visual disadvantages had to be accepted, because Heilbronner Straße, one of the busiest streets in Stuttgart, and passenger and freight train traffic pass directly by.

Criticism The project was not without its critics. It started out ambitiously with ambitious ecological goals. "But the more concretely we developed the project, the more the client and management scaled back the demands. All that remained was the glass hall - a manifesto of wasted ideas," Vandkunsten wrote in the Deutsche Bauzeitung in 1993.
