45897 Gelsenkirchen-Schaffrath: by 2018, it was the largest German solar housing estate with a peak output of 825 kWp. The 71 existing buildings with a total of 422 apartments and 27,420 m² of living space were renovated for energy efficiency. Operator: THS Wohnen GmbH (today: VIVAWEST Wohnen GmbH). Completion: 2008

The existing housing estate was built in 1960. In each case 2 to 4 houses are combined to a total of 26 rows. In 1987-89, the estate was conventionally refurbished and modernised. Until 2018, the large roof-integrated PV system, was the largest of its kind on the roofs of a contiguous settlement or urban quarter in Germany. The CO2 emissions caused by heating, hot water production and household electricity consumption amounted to 1550 t/a before the redevelopment into a solar settlement. Through the insulation measures and the conversion of the water heating to district heating, they could be reduced by 390 t/a. The photovoltaic system yields a further saving of 420 t/a. In total, CO2 emissions were reduced by more than 50 %.
